Not only that, but most of them end up in landfills, where they decay and produce methane gas, a gas that’s over 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Given that, it’s best to ditch them altogether. Consider using cotton or cellulose dishcloths instead—they’re much more environmentally friendly. Other alternatives include microfiber towels, bamboo paper towels, and unpaper towels (reusable ‘paper towels’ that are made of fabric).
Cut Down on Your Plastic Use
Avoid single-use plastics such as take-out containers, coffee cup lids, grocery bags, straws, and water bottles; they can take up to 1,000 years to degrade in landfills. Not to mention that they can also enter our oceans and affect wildlife.
For instance, it’s not uncommon for fish and sea turtles to mistake plastic bags for food. Once ingested, they can cause blockages within their digestive systems; this can eventually lead to death.
Consider using eco-friendly alternatives instead. For example, you can use a reusable bag instead of a plastic bag when you’re out getting groceries. And in the kitchen, you can use beeswax wrap instead of plastic wrap; it’s made from a breathable material and will keep your food fresher for longer.
Use Solar Power
Want an eco-friendly home? Then consider installing solar panels on your roof. Not only will they let you derive clean energy from the sun, but they can also help combat global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions (they don’t produce any air contaminants).
That’s not all, solar energy is also sustainable—it’s an infinite source of energy, after all. It’s constantly replenished so you won’t have to worry about using up all of the earth’s resources.
The only drawback is the high upfront costs. On average, solar installation cost ranges from $12,000 to $14,000.
