Acceptable proof of identity
To sell your car for scrap in the UK, you need to provide proof of your identity and residence. To prove identity, some legal documents that are considered acceptable include your driving license, European Economic Area EEA state passport, UK passport, or EEA state passport.
Similarly, documents that are considered acceptable for proving residence include utility bills, credit cards or bank statements. These documents should not be older than three months.
Vehicle registration document
The vehicle registration document, also called the V5C document, shows the ownership and registration of a car. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) requires it to check the tax history and confirm the registration of a vehicle.
You will have to hand over this document to the Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) after removing yellow strips from it. You can use these strips as proof in the future. If you have lost V5C, then there is no need to pay for a new V5C. You can simply send a letter to DVLA to inform them that you used to own this car and now you have sold it for scrap.
Certificate of destruction (CoD)
Certificate of destruction (CoD) is an official document issued by the car scrapping centres that have the ATF license. This document states that your car has been scrapped, and you are no longer its owner. You will need to fill and exchange V5C/3 for the Certificate of Destruction.
Most of the scrapping centres issue Certificate of Destruction within 24 hours of scrapping the car. Keep this document safe as proof because replacing it is not possible. You can notify the DVLA that you have scrapped your car even if you have not received your CoD. You can get fined for not notifying the DVLA.
Steps to selling your car for scrap
- Remove all personal items from the car, and clean it to make sure nothing personal stays
- Look for a licensed scrapping centre either through the internet or by asking others who have gotten their cars scrapped before.
- Contact different scrapping centres to choose the one whose quote and services are the most suitable.
- Get a pickup date and time for the car. You can either take your car yourself or let the ATF pickup from your place.
- After sending your car to the ATF, inform the DVLA of your decision. It is a must step that you cannot ignore no matter what.
- Get your Certificate of Destruction from the ATF.
- Contact the insurance company if your car was insured.
- Get your car’s tax that you did not use refunded.
