Forex Scams

The emergence of TikTok as a social media platform leader has not only added innovation to the digital landscape of Pakistan, but it has also created controversy there. It has also evolved in the past few years as an unforeseen source of forex-related content, with so-called traders boasting of posh lifestyles and offering money-making opportunities with unrealistic promises. The presence of these influencers says they have mastered the art of forex trading and release videos with cars, designer clothes and piles of cash to lure the young audience. The truth, though, is much more mundane since most of these celebrities are on the platform attracting their followers into scams related to forex, masquerading as mentorship courses or investment avenues.

To a large extent, this fraud starts with assurances of free and easy money, and financial liberation. The influencers usually market trading as a quicker way to get rich, meaning that anyone can become successful after little effort or education. Their videos are characterized by high involvement, catchy slogans and appeals to emotions that can appeal to ambitious young Pakistanis who are aggrieved by the lack of access to economic opportunities. Upon the winning of the trust, these influencers redirect their followers to an unregulated forex broker or affiliate links, or to unregulated trading academies, which are usually closed groups. Under the carpet, such interrelations frequently result in sham websites that make profits on deposits but not on actual trade operations.

The complaints related to online forex scams that are a result of social media advertisements have been on a steep rise as observed by the authorities. The victims are convinced to join paid groups or purchase trading signals distributed in WhatsApp or Telegram channels, in which alleged experts assure of guaranteed profit. Most of them are then compelled to open accounts with unscrupulous brokers and end up putting huge amounts in the accounts on false promises of high returns. In case the promised profits do not take shape, those who influence disappear or stop communication altogether. The absence of formal control in the field of influencer marketing in the financial industry has rendered it hard to hold such persons accountable.

According to financial experts, the power to persuade on Tik Tok is in its short story format. Influencers portray a false sense of ease in the field of forex trading by reducing the complicated financial information to enjoyable bits. Such simplification warps the minds of the people and makes the viewers believe that trading success relies less on skill and strategy and more on luck or inside influence. The lack of adequate disclaimers or proven credentials in the vast majority of videos contributes to the confusion and it is difficult to distinguish the legitimacy of education and persuasive sales measures.

This issue is made even more arduous by the availability of social media. Every person who has a smartphone and can access the internet can position oneself as a trading guru, whether or not he or she has the experience. This is exploited by unregulated forex brokers who provide commission based payments to influencers that get new clients onboard. Such alliances promote aggressive marketing and false information, which can even be immoral. There are also multiple situations where influencers are caught posting edited screenshots of returns or forged trading performance to increase the audience interest.

The efforts to contain this increasing problem are yet to be successful. The Federal Investigation Agency is also starting to scrutinize online promotions of financial products more carefully and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan is still advising investors to follow the advice to check licenses before committing their money to a broker. Awareness campaigns to the general population are also being promoted to create awareness among the users on the dangers of online trading and the tricks of the scammers. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task due to the fact that Tik Tok content turns over rapidly and the social media provides anonymity.

The only way to protect new traders in the future is to educate people about the existence of financial literacy and distrust online promises. In the case of real forex trading, it needs discipline, knowledge, and patience, which are not displayed in viral videos where they promise quick wealth. The future traders must consider the trusted educational sites, licensed forex broker, and licensed institutions to obtain safety and accountability. Unless a more effective digital control is established, the audience should treat financial information on TikTok with a grain of salt because it is likely that behind the filters and flash, there is a carefully planned scheme to make money by exploiting trust.
